The good news is that as New Yorkers, we do not need to worry about Zika as no locally transmitted cases have been reported. A few cases have been noted in returning travelers from Zika hot zones which include a number of South & Central American areas as well as Puerto Rico, but these cases were contracted there. The Zika virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, the same species that carries dengue fever and chikungunya. Fortunately, this species is not found in our area. As we do not have reservoirs of infected people nor is the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is the primary carrier, found in in our area, we remain safe at this time.
The bad news is that while Aedes aegypti are the primary carriers of Zika, Aedes albopictus, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, can pose as a secondary carrier of the virus. This nasty black and white day biter has been on the increase in our area over the past few years. Still, fortunately there are no reservoirs of infected persons and we hope it stays this way. Despite the fact that we seem safe for the time being, this development should underscore the importance of early mosquito management which starts long before you see any mosquitos.
Standard Pest management has been helping reduce our client’s exposure by following the steps of IPM mosquito management. It begins with an inspection and tip sheet to identify standing water issues to be addressed either by elimination or through the use of a larvacide to prevent development of the mosquito from egg to adult via its complete life cycle. This is followed up with tried exclusion measures which incorporate the use of behavior modification, screens, air doors, exterior lighting, and various traps. Finally, in some cases, we may perform spray applications of Green materials to reduce impact to non-target organisms such as bees and other beneficial insects and arthropods.
Over the past few years, in addition to residential and commercial protection, we have supplied field services for a number of well-known production companies who don’t want their stars, writers or crew
